To live is to suffer. We are all suffering in some way or another. We are all in pain, yet we do not treat the problem, we treat the symptoms. We all suffer from the human condition. And instead of treating this painful condition, we punish it. We treat our symptoms of loneliness, boredom, depression, and emptiness with endless consumption, but it has not yet cured our ailments and has seemingly made them worse. We have so far been unable to provide systematic compassion and empathy to ease and treat our suffering. We instead enforce punishment for non-compliance, creating even more pain and suffering.
Together we can cure the human condition, we can ease our pain, we can end our suffering.
It's time to put all humans first.
The Infinite Game
The book Finite and Infinite Games by James P Carse is the foundational literature for understanding the goals of GUSS.
A finite game has:
- Specific rules
- Players and an Audience
- A start and an end
- Winners and losers
An infinite game:
- Has a flexible rule set designed to allow unlimited play
- Intentionally changes the rules to include all players that want to play
- Is played for the sake of playing instead of the goal of winning
GUSS is a software platform whose implementation goal is to become the infinite game. The function of the infinite game is manage Earth's resources in a way that results in the optimal progression of mankind's collective capabilities.
All resources of planet Earth shall be shared freely and consumed with restraint, as each human strives to learn their own boundary between enough and too much.
We recognize that we are each afflicted by the human condition in a unique way, and that we shall study our own defects so that we may avoid causing harm to others.
Each individual is guaranteed full control of their own person while they are not in violation of this same rule.
Global Systems Engineering
The problems we face as a species is a simple engineering problem brought on by our shared condition. By acknowledging our weaknesses, we can design and implement a social machinery that allows us to be ourselves without causing widespread problems as a result. For example, our human predisposition to be corrupted by power has resulted in a social machinery where power is amassed by individuals that have become addicted to it, resulting in their inability to make decisions that are beneficial for the collective.
The most stable system is the one that:
- Is the most adaptible to change
- Has its weight evenly distributed
Concepts such as leadership and representative democracy have a purpose. Not everyone understands how to steer the boat, but they do know where they want to go. Leaders are tasked with listening to citizens and steering the boat as decided by the collective. Unfortunately, leaders generally end up steering the boat where they choose, based on what they want.
Having a single captain steering the ship creates a single point of failure. If the captain becomes corrupt or otherwise fails their duties, the entire ship is jeopardized. No human is perfect, and being a leader requires perfection to avoid potentially catastrophic failure. Positions of power are too much for any individual.
As such, it is a major goal of GUSS to find out how to effectively distribute power, not by having a steering wheel for each person on a single ship, but rather to give each person their own boats that can join and unjoin with other ships as the individuals see fit.
The ultimate goal is to create a blank canvas on which to paint our future, but without agitating major systems that are already in place. In application development, we can abstract (hide) old code and provide a shiny new interface. Everything still goes through the old code, where necessary, but it is done behind the scenes. This allows us to focus on what's important instead of struggling with a bad API.
GUSS will do this by automating the interface between projects and governments where possible. In an ideal situation, a GUSS project should be easy to create and participate in by satisfying current governing institutions in the background. Any project's need for permits or taxes or other legal overhead should be handled by GUSS with absolute minimal inconvenience to GUSS participants.
Instead of "fighting the system", we comply in earnest, we automate our compliance, and we don't bother our users with bureaucratic red-tape details. Let GUSS handle that for you.
What's left is a fresh field of green, a brand new platform awaiting transformation by talented creators!
It would be naive to say that each human is the same, or that we all share the same capabilities. Some of us are, in fact, better operators of the human body than others.
Where we have gone wrong, historically, is deciding that some humans deserve more than others based on their perceived abilities as a human.
The objective of GUSS is to allow the human hierarchy to self-organize by creating a stable platform where all efforts are made treat everyone fairly. This is contrasted by the current methods where leaders implement policies that shape the hierarchy as they see fit.
In the first of what is likely to be many iterations, following is the description of software designed to implement the infinite game.
It is easy for a human to list their priorities. It is extremely difficult, due to the human condition, to act in accordance with these priorities.
Each participant will be asked to maintain a priorities list describing the most important things as they see fit. For example:
- Good Health
- Clean Water
- Healthy Food
The priorities of each participant are then aggregated, allowing participants to grasp the priorities of the collective.
The collective then works together using the GUSS platform to strive to meet the priorities of all participants.
Each priority listed implies a set of resources and labor to fulfil.
Resources become available to the GUSS platform by donation via an intake process. A major goal of the GUSS platform is to provide impecible resource accounting.
Ideally, all resources would be evenly divided and shared among all the participants. However, this is not necessarily realistic, so we would need to determine an acceptable way for allocating resources in a way that minimizes conflict and highlights demand for scarce resources.
A project is the way GUSS combines labor and resources to create products and services that satisfy priorities.
Ideally, a project exists independent of any single person. The processes and technologies for each project are well-documented and open source, allowing any intrested participant to contribute.
Project participation is never mandatory, as this would be in violation of the social contract.
All individual creation belongs to the collective. Engineering diagrams, special recipes, blueprints, etc. Everything created by the GUSS society is open source and belongs to the public domain.
The concept of patents and similar protections exhibit childlike behavior. "I have something you want and I'm not going to share unless you give me money for it. And if you try to make something just like it, I'm going to sue you for money and you won't be allowed to make it anymore." This is selfish and does not benefit the collective in any way, but rather individuals.
"But if you don't grant protections to inventors, they'll stop inventing!"
Good. GUSS doesn't want inventions that were created to make money. GUSS wants to support individuals while they create inspired solutions to modern day problems for the sake of solving problems and making the world a better place. Inventors who are in it for exploitative reasons aren't the sort of person that would be successful in a GUSS society.
Finally, if all intellectual property is within the public domain, it can be expanded and improved by anyone. No one individual has all the answers, the inventor doesn't have the full perspective required to create a perfect invention. In order to do that, you need to let the end-users make changes to the product, and that's just not possible in a patent-locked intellectual space.
Each human is capable of performing certain tasks at a certain efficiency and proficiency. Humans are also capable of learning new skills.
As such, each GUSS participant can be notified of interesting project task opportunities based on their skills.
Task completion should be graded and attached to a person's record. The grading system would strive to optimize matching between project task objectives and the individual that can accomplish said objective most efficiently.
The concept that allowed the industrial revolution to take such a powerful hold society was "interchangeable parts". Building machines from a collection of uniform, mass-produced parts allowed us to build a single unit that could be serviced and repaired using a collection of widely available parts and pieces.
In modern society, our humans specialize in their skills, making them highly valuable in one area of the economy, and nearly worthless in nearly all other areas. If our we built our economy in such a way that individuals could switch quickly from task to task, regardless of base skills, we could approach something like the industrial revolution, except with labor.
This would also simplify education, teaching one skill: how to learn new skills. Combine this with critical thinking and problem solving, and we end up with a massive labor force of extremely productive and capable individuals.
Each participant is responsible for their own actions at any given time. As such, every person is effectively voting for how they want to contribute to our society at each moment. Additionally, each human can only ever do one thing at a time. We are essentially bound by fairness at the level of physics in our reality.
Humans then constantly choose how they want to contribute to GUSS, whether this means taking care of themselves, or contibuting to an existing project.
The purpose here is two-fold:
- Project participants actually care about the jobs they do because no one forces them to do it
- Each person is free to contribute to society in a way that is meaningful to them by supporting a project they feel has a positive influence on our shared society.
The economy is, in its current format, a guessing game that hinges on human emotions. Suppliers of goods and services have a vague idea of their demand, lacking any real certainty about whether the goods they are producing will ever be sold.
It is the objective of GUSS to create a resource accounting system that communicates demand directly to suppliers, in this case, GUSS projects.
Item-level understanding of supply and demand will help us to become extremely efficient at resource utilization.
The ultimate goal is for a user to press a button, and a machine somewhere begins producing the product.
The primary hypothesis of GUSS is this:
- If everyone has a solid safety net, and the easiest way to survive is by participating in the system, crime will all but abolish itself
That said, GUSS will never implement any sort of law enforcement in its code. GUSS will leave such demands to the free market. A word of advice, however:
- Reflect on the system, and see if there are any flaws that may have caused or contributed to this behavior.
- Be compassionate towards the individual. Humans that violate social norms are acting out in pain, having experienced a personal trauma.
- End the echoes of this individual's pain so they will stop inflicting further pain on others.
Humans became the dominant species on this planet due to intelligence, efficiency, and, most importantly, social cooperation. In our newly global society, we find ourselves creating divisions based on differences instead of uniting under our commonalities. This is natural, and caused the human condition. We must recognize and accept our predilection to separatism if we are to move forward.
What are we trying to collectively accomplish? What motivates us? In the United States, we are motivated by social competition. That is, to have more than others in order to stand out. To have the newest phone, a bigger TV, a nicer car. Or, we are struggling to survive, to keep a roof over our heads, to feed our kids, to provide adequate healthcare to our family without going bankrupt.
To what end do we continue down our current path? Until we've consumed all of Earth's resources without having accomplished anything? Until a single corporation owns the entire world? Or a single government controls all trade?
Everyone in power is playing a finite game, a game they are desperately trying to win. What does it look like to "win" this game?
It's time for mankind to evolve, to put real priorities first, both in words and in actions. It's time to see what we can accomplish by working together, by uniting and showing our oppressors that we don't need or want them to control us.
Let's see what we can accomplish as a united planet.
